Give, request, and manage recommendations

Write a useful professional recommendation and manage recommendations on your profile.

A good recommendation explains how you know the person, what you saw them do, and why it mattered. A specific example is worth more than general praise.

Write a recommendation

1. Open the builder’s profile and start a recommendation.
2. Select how you know them. The relationship is required.
3. Describe a specific project, responsibility, or result you observed. There is a minimum length, and the form counts characters for you.
4. Optionally add the skills you can vouch for, then submit.

Name the kind of work without sharing confidential information, and leave out claims you cannot support.

Ask for one

Use Ask for a Recommendation on your own profile. You can send it to someone on Dapping, who receives a notification with your context, or to an email address, which opens your mail client with a link back to your profile. Add a note saying which project or responsibility would help readers most.

Ask someone who directly observed the work. A request stays pending until it is answered, declined, or cancelled. Declines and cancellations are silent, so nobody is told they turned you down.

Manage what appears

Your profile keeps recommendations you received separate from those you gave.

• Received. You can hide one, which removes it from your public profile. You can unhide it later.
• Given. You can hide your own, which withdraws it from both profiles. You can also edit the text and relationship at any time.
• Delete. Only the person who wrote a recommendation can delete it. Deleting removes it from both profiles permanently.

Adding skill endorsements is part of writing a recommendation, so editing the text afterwards does not change the endorsements attached to it.

Keep references current. Hide or remove one if the relationship was described incorrectly or the context is no longer appropriate to show. Do not pressure anyone into a reciprocal recommendation.
